Does massage therapy help with stress ?

Holistic, Sports , Deep tissue, Aromatherapy, Thai, Swedish, & Indian Head massages— the list of massage types is probably more than 100 strong & have origins across many countries!

Where does it come from?
BC 2330: The Tomb of Akmanthor (also known as "The Tomb of the Physician") in Saggara, Egypt. The scene depicts two men having work done on their feet and hands, presumably massage.

BC 722-481:Massage is referred to in 30 different chapters of the Nei Jing. The Nei-jing is a compilation of medical knowledge known up to that date, and is the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It specifies the use of different massage techniques and how they should be used in the treatment of specific ailments, and injuries.
BC 700: Bian Que, the earliest known Chinese physician uses massage in medical practice.

Whilst a good rub down makes you feel good, is getting a massage really worth the cash? This may well be the case, studies suggest massage therapy can be beneficial not only in reducing physical pain, but also for improving mood and fighting stress

Massage Therapy is any treatment where a therapist manipulates the body’s muscles and soft tissues or delivers healing energy work to relieve pain or decrease stress. But not all massage is the same!

Styles range from a light general massage, Holistic (often called Swedish) to reflexology, where the therapist applies pressure to a specific point on the body in order to relieve pain.

The list of ailments that massage can be used to treat is just as long as the list of massage types itself. A recent study found that massage therapy can reduce pain, promote muscle relaxation, and improve both mood and sleep quality. Another study found that after subjects were massaged, the levels of cortisol (a hormone contributing to stress) decreased.

Worth the cost? You Choose!

Although massage therapy may be more expensive than a walk in the park or a bar of chocolate (its probably cheaper than 'a night on the town'), it’s possible the psychological & physical benefits of massage therapy may far outweigh its higher cost, (the benefits & residual good feelings lasting longer too)

Whilst the majority of massage effects are stress-relieving and positive, there are a few things to consider before diving into a deep tissue. Not just anyone can give a true therapeutic massage, so make sure to seek the services of a trained & qualified therapist. And while it's normal to feel a little sore the day after, with many types of massage on offer, it should never be painful or uncomfortable, so communication with the therapist is key.

After all its your money and time, so you want to enjoy it (or in the case of some of the deeper/ sports massages- at least see & feel the benefits)
